Sharma is a renowned educationist, well-known in academic circles, an Honours Graduate in Botany in 1969, M.Sc. from Hans Raj College in 1971, and Ph.D. from the University of Delhi in 1974. He taught in Hindu College, University of Delhi from 1974 to 2013.
